Beauty FAQ | “Can I use Retin-A with vitamin C – or is that too much?”

I know a lot of my readers turn to powerful products to keep their skin concerns at bay – so when a reader messaged me with this question, I wasn’t really all that surprised! I recently posted about vitamin C (here) – after hearing about the benefits a reader was wondering if they were able to use vitamin C products in conjunction with Retin-A…

??????????

It’s definitely safe to use Retin-A and vitamin C products at the same time! There are really no contradictions between the two – sometimes though, if you use Retin-A with other over-the-counter anti-aging products (like those that contain retinol) it can be a bit too much for the skin to tolerate. Just be aware of your skin type when mixing and matching products – as a general rule, if you’re on the oilier side (like me), your skin’s going to be a lot thicker – giving it the ability to take quite the pounding. If you’re on the drier side though – well, you get the idea…

If you wanted to use both at the same time I’d recommend using vitamin C in the morning and Retin-A in the evening – be careful though, if scaling or irritation occurs, limit the use of Retin-A to every other day – and go from there (some of my clients can only  use Retin-A every three days, even at the lowest concentration).

  1. Love this! I’ve always wondered too :] I use both Vitamin C and Retin A Micro and I do what you suggested every day. My skin did get a little drier in the winter though, so I used more Vitamin C since it was a little nicer to my skin. I have a question though, what happens if you use them at the same time? Does it deactivate them? It could just be an old wives tale that I’ve heard, but I’m still curious!
