DIY | You asked for an answer to your lackluster winter skin – and here it is!

Originally posted January 2012: Dull, dehydrated winter skin is once again a concern for a lot of my readers, so I thought I’d repost a pretty popular DIY tutorial from last year – enjoy guys!

So a few people have e-mailed me asking for advice on treating problematic winter skin…and here’s a really easy DIY treatment to get the ball rolling! This scrub is perfect because the lemon is chock full of vitamin C (which helps to increase collagen production and even out skin tone) and fruit acids – this means it’s going to help smooth out unevenness in texture, tone and help to reduce the size of enlarged pores. That being said – let’s get right into the tutorial!

Important Note: I know it’s a completely different seasonal worry…but if you’re a fan of fake tanners (much like myself) then this scrub is also fantastic at removing self tanner buildup and fading the appearance of “mishaps”.

Brightening Lemon Face and Body Scrub

What you’ll need:

  • 1/2 cup of finely milled sea salt (or sugar). (The sea salt will really help to slough away dead skin cells and assist the lemon zest in brightening the skin.)
  • 3 tablespoons of honey. (The honey works to kill surface bacteria – and also works against inflammation.)
  • 1 teaspoon of finely grated lemon zest. (The lemon zest is naturally high in vitamin C which will help to increase elasticity and even out skin tone.)

Directions:

  • Stir all of the ingredients until well-blended.
  • Rub the mixture vigorously over any dull or dry areas on the face or body.
  • Rinse the mixture with lukewarm water.

See – wasn’t that easy!? I love the smell of this scrub in the morning (and if you use it in the morning you’ll notice that your makeup goes on much smoother too)! Instantly, your skin should have a boost in radiance and feel incredibly smooth – isn’t it amazing what we can whip together with just a few household ingredients?

    • You got it! I take a hand grater and go at the lemon for this particular recipe, ahaha! I always make a little but too much…that’s ok though. Anyways, I’m rambling. Let me know how it goes for you…and if you have any other questions I’m right here. ;)

  1. And right when I want to make it, I realize THERE’S NO LEMONS HERE!!! haha, thank you much, I’ll be sure to post how it goes for me when I do get the chance to try it (:

    • No problem-o! I just made some of this scrub last night to get rid of some fake tan buildup I had going on from an AWFUL product experience. I’m glad this recipe’s still garnering attention because it’s absolutely amazing. :3

    • Hey Mercedes,

OK, so blackheads can be tricky – depending on how long they’ve been in the skin you might want to consider professional treatment options (microdermabrasion is the best in this scenario). You really want to be conscious of your deep exfoliating/cleansing regiment though – are you using a scrub and a mask? A scrub is going to help to remove excess dead skin, cause a production of collagen and help all of your other products to work better – then you’ll want to follow-up with a detoxifying mask to draw out any excessive impurities/tackle any other irregularities (if you need any product recommendations let me know).

For dryness – once again, exfoliation is key here. We want to exfoliate more (about every 3 days) and moisturize less…the reason for this is because the skin tends to get lazy when we suffocate it with moisturizer. When we get into a regular exfoliating routine we cause the skin to get into the habit of healing itself – especially when we’re not overusing our moisturizer. For the eyes though, the only thing I could recommend is a hydrating eye cream – but I’m assuming you’re using one, right?

      Let me know!

      • Thanks for the info, Jake!! You are the first to ever answer a question for me!! O.K. so this is really embarrassing but I have never had a regiment. Can you recommend a scrub/mask? What do you use to exfoliate and is moisturizer under makeup daily not a good idea?? I don’t use a eye cream but would like a recommendation on a good one.
Guess your never too old to learn and start something new!!

      • You’ve never had a regiment? OK, so the first thing you’ll want to invest in is a cleanser/toner/moisturizer – those are your basics and they help to balance the skin’s pH levels and protect it from future damage. Before you work your way into deep cleansing/exfoliation and specialty treatments you want to make sure you’ve got your basics down. A cleanser is alkaline and helps to relieve the skin of oils, dirt and debris (but it also removes the good acids from the skin – which is why you follow-up with a toner)…then a light layer of moisturizer on top is really going to help to lock in the skin’s natural hydration and protect from airborne debris. Then once every 3-4 days after you cleanse, you’ll exfoliate, throw on your mask, tone and moisturize.

I would love to recommend some skincare but I don’t know your actual skin type – so it can be hard. I can recommend an exfoliant and a mask no problem though (they’re more geared towards multiple skin types). My favorite exfoliant is microscrub – it has a ton of emollients and arnica, so it’s not too abrasive, but it does a really good job of revealing a fresher complexion. For masks I’m a huge fan of vitamin C & retinol mask – I linked you to my article on here which explains it a bit more in detail!

Oh, and eye cream – that’s easy too…the skin around the eyes is typically the same for everybody. You just want to be really conscious of whether or not your eyes are sensitive to certain ingredients (for me, a lot of astringent ingredients formulated for the eye area tend to irritate my eyes). My favorite is protocell eye cream – the polysaccharides and argan oil cause the cream to be super hydrating, but the apple stems cells work cumulatively (over time) to really reverse and protect against the signs of aging. This is a super rich eye cream – and an absolute favorite of mine.

Once again, if you have any more questions – shoot!
